CoolSculpting, launched in the US in 2010, is a technology-based system which basically freezes fat cells away. As discussed above, when we gain and lose weight, our fat cells basically grow and shrink, but our proportions pretty much stay the same. CoolSculpting is revolutionary in that it lets you target your stubborn fat with “spot treatment.” That means the fat comes off where you want it too. And for the first time, safe and effective spot reduction of fatty bulges can be performed noninvasively, and with no downtime.
Body sculpting is pretty fresh on the scene. In 2008, two Harvard-affiliated scientists founded the idea of selective cryolosis—the process of freezing fat cells and killing them, eliminating stubborn body fat. The hypothesis that cold temperatures could kill fat came from one interesting observation. Children who sucked on popsicles often developed dimples, indicating that cold temperature could eliminate fat cells, leaving little “pockets.” Weirdly, body sculpting sort of mimics popsicle sucking.
Every person’s body shape and structure is different. Hence, the treatment also varies from patient to patient. The number of sessions a patient as to undergo depends on several factors but the end goal always remain in achieving the desired body shape and tone for you. For instance, if you’re looking to remove just one pocket of fat, then one session of non-invasive treatment should be sufficient to take care of your needs. One session has been shown to reduce 20-25% of fat. On the contrary, if you have multiple pockets of fat that needs to be removed, it might take three to five treatment sessions administered over a six week long period.
Now here are a couple more facts: We all have many billions of fat cells. In fact, the number of fat cells that we have, and the distribution of those cells are both pretty much fixed from very early in life (around one year in age). The reason that different people have different shapes is that their fat cells are distributed differently. The woman with disproportionately wide outer thighs has more fat cells in that area, and therefore she perceives it as a stubborn disproportion. One man may have a relative ‘hill’ of fat cells under his chin; another in his love handles, and so on.
The research reported that patients who underwent bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery on the stomach and/or intestines) who waited about a year before undergoing body-contouring surgery saw a reduction in the complication rate -- and ended up with shorter hospital stays. The researchers also reported that waiting allowed the death rate to drop dramatically, from 14% for those who had body-contouring surgery soon after losing the weight, to 0% for those who waited.
